The Small Theatre

Also called "Odeion", the Little Theatre of Pompeii had a structure very similar to that of the Grand Theatre and could accommodate about one thousand three hundred people. Here musical performances and recitations of poemswere held; the theater was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 b.C. and was found only after the excavations in the archaeological site of Pompeii.

Its shape is that of a semicircle inscribed in a square and was formed by:
Orchestra
Area from the circular plan whose floor was made of slabs of colored marble of various shapes donated, as reported by an inscription of bronze, by Marco Oculatio Vero. The stage did not show great particularity: originally decorated in marble, had a space for the curtain and three entrances that led to the changing rooms.

Area for the public
This area was divided into "Tribunalia", which rested on parodoi and had input directly from the scene and then there was the Cavea. The latter was divided into Media and Ima Camea therefore it lacked the Summa Cavea. The steps of the Cavea were characterized by the presence of a cavity in the rear in such a way as to avoid that the spectators sitting in front could be disturbed by the feet of those behind.
The few pictorial decorations found are in second style.
